Urban Excellence Convention

The first Urban Excellence Convention located at the Museum of Children's Arts in Oakland, CA Saturday, March 23rd 2019 was a huge success! The digital and social media literacy convention hosted multifaceted speakers, panelists and performers. We brought together industry professionals, community members and youth to discuss digital and social media literacy as a critical aspect of youth success. Information about the topics discussed are below.

Digital Literacy: The Internet, Fake News & Social Media

I introduced the ideas of digital literacy as a critical aspect of youth success (life, freedom and future career & educational opportunities). We had discussions about the internet, fake news & social media. I highlighted my Digital and Social Media Literacy curriculum and research papers written while a Communication Graduate student.

Community Resilience

A conversation facilitated by Monika Brooks with DeMareon Gipson, Darius Simpson, Alton Williams, Chayla Gibson & Teresa Baker. We discussed a non-judgmental perspective on normal human reactions to stress and trauma in order to help people understand the common reactions after traumatic experiences are biology, not mental weakness.

Digital Media & The Future

A conversation facilitated by Jazmin Marquez with Courtney Smith, Dayna Avent, John de los Angeles, Chance Moses & David Gonzalez. We had a rich panel of entrepreneurs and industry professionals discussing ideas surrounding digital media access, the increased use of the internet, cell phones and other technologies in defining ourselves.
